How Earthquakes Happen

Earthquakes are one of the most destructive natural disasters on Earth. They occur when energy stored in the Earth's crust is suddenly released, creating seismic waves that shake the ground. This usually happens because of the movement of tectonic plates, which are large pieces of the Earth's crust that float on the semi-fluid mantle beneath them.

When these plates collide, move apart, or slide past one another, stress builds up along the boundaries. Once the stress exceeds the strength of the rocks, it is released in the form of an earthquake. The point inside the Earth where the earthquake starts is called the focus, while the point on the Earth’s surface directly above it is known as the epicenter.

The intensity of an earthquake depends on the amount of energy released and its distance from the surface. Strong earthquakes can cause massive destruction, such as collapsing buildings, damaging infrastructure, and even triggering tsunamis if they occur under the ocean. Although scientists cannot predict exactly when earthquakes will happen, they can identify high-risk areas and design safer buildings to reduce the damage caused by these natural disasters.

How Rain Forms

Rain is a natural process that happens when water from the Earth’s surface evaporates, rises into the atmosphere, and cools down to form clouds. The process begins when the sun heats rivers, lakes, and oceans, causing water to turn into vapor. This water vapor then rises into the sky with warm air.

As the vapor rises higher, the temperature becomes cooler. The vapor condenses into tiny water droplets, which gather together to form clouds. When the droplets combine and grow heavier, they cannot remain suspended in the air. At this stage, gravity pulls them down, and they fall as rain.

Rain is very important for life on Earth. It provides fresh water for humans, animals, and plants. Without rain, rivers and lakes would dry up, and living things would not survive.

6. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?

7. What causes water to evaporate from Earth’s surface?

8. Why do water droplets fall as rain?

9. What does the word condenses in paragraph 2 mean?

10. Why is rain important for life on Earth?
